Readying your landscape for winter

Well, it’s almost that time of the year when we are preparing for the many family visits, the big Thanksgiving feast, the jolly Christmas season, and snow. Yes, I said it, snow. It’s actually just right around the corner! Have you prepared your landscape for the snow about to hit us? Since I’m in a checklist mood (and checking it twice,) I thought I would do a “Readying Your Landscape for the Winter” checklist. Well, here it is:

  • Cut your grass, remembering the 1/3 rule, not too long (you’ll get snow mold come Spring) and not too short (you’ll kill your poor grass.)
  • Rake (or mulch) your leaves (no suffocating your grass!)
  • Aerate and re-seed your lawn (think lush green lawn for the Spring!)
  • Prune shrubs (especially cracked, diseased limbs.) Snow can damage limbs that are weak.
  • Give your planting beds a little TLC- Trim perennial foliage. Pull spent, tired annuals.
  • Mulch beds (protect and keep those plants warm through this harsh Winter we are supposed to have.)
  • Winterize your sprinkler systems to prevent freezing water cracking the pipes!
  • Clean your gutters from all those leaves and trees growing from above.
  • Plant some fall bulbs, like tulips and daffodils, so you have some beautiful flowers come Spring.

I hope this has helped you and not frustrated you with yet another “Honey Do” list! Of course, you can always call your trusty landscaper to help you complete these tasks too. Re-Posted by Joyce Harris. Posted In : Winterizing
